This concert will be to honor the dedicatory naming of the 1 910 Hook &\; Hastings organ which was rescued\, augmented and restored by Marceau Organ company and installed in 1999 at Chapel Hill. This 58 ran k pipe organ features 3558 pipes and a 4 manual console.\n\nThe recital wi ll feature the two main purposes of this great instrument. First\, is the production of inspiring\, up-lifting and worshipful music. Second\, is the leading and accompaniment of congregational hymn singing. Both functions are vital and will be featured in this special recital.\n\nChapel Hill has decided to honor two families who\, along with others\, were leaders in t he securing\, restoration and installation of this outstanding instrument. Consequently\, the organ will be named in their honor The Stephens/Uddenb erg Memorial organ.\n\nDouglas Cleveland is the John Delo Faculty Fellow i n organ at the University of Washington School of Music\, Seattle\, Washin gton. He is also Director of Music and Liturgical Arts at St. Thomas Episc opal Church\, Medina\, Washington. He grew up in Olympia\, Washington wher e his parents currently reside. Douglas studied under Ed Hanson at Univers ity of Puget Sound when in high school. Subsequently\, he studied at the E astman School of Music\, Indiana University and Oxford University. Clevela nd received a Lilly grant to study advanced choral conducting with David H ill at Winchester Cathedral. Mr. Cleveland gained international prominence when he won first prize in the 1994 American Guild of Organists National Young Artists Competition in Dallas. Since then\, he has performed in 48 o f the United States and has been invited to perform in such venues as West minster Abbey\, the Berlin Cathedral\, Stockholm Cathedral\, Moscow Conser vatory\, Norte-Dame Cathedral in Paris\, St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Melb ourne\, Minato Murai Concert Hall in Yokohama\, Japan and the Cathedral of Lausanne\, Switzerland. He has also performed with several symphony orche stras including the Chicago Symphony and the National Symphony\, for an au dience of 3\,000 at the Washington National Cathedral. Late in 2017 Dougla ss presented concerts and taught classes in Beijing\, China.\n\nCome hear this world renown artist play the outstanding instrument and participate i n the singing of beautiful hymns to the glory of God.
