Availability and Purpose
The Tacoma Chapter of the AGO offers an annual scholarship. One scholarship each year in the amount of $720 for a minimum of 10 lessons will be awarded to the successful candidate. If two candidates are deemed to be equally worthy to receive the scholarship, then half of the amount would go to each ($360 for a minimum of 5 lessons).
The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage young musicians to study organ by assisting in the cost of private lessons on a pipe organ with a teacher who is a member of the Tacoma Chapter of the AGO.
Eligibility
The scholarship is open to any student of a member of the Tacoma Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. Preference will be given to high school students, but others may apply. Preference will be given to new applicants, but previous winners may reapply. The scholarship is not available to students who are receiving academic credit for lessons since those lessons are covered by tuition.
Criteria
The AGO Scholarship Committee will evaluate all materials submitted, including the essay, audition recording, and the recommendation of the teacher in order to select the student who demonstrates the most potential.
Deadlines
For 2024-2025, applications must be received by September 30, 2024 Applicants will be notified by October 31, 2024.
Administration
The scholarship committee will receive and evaluate applications, and notify the winner and the winner’s teacher. The teacher may submit reimbursement requests to cover the cost of lessons.
Governance
The scholarship program is administered by the AGO Scholarship Committee. The chair of this committee is appointed by the Dean and ratified by the executive committee. The chair selects members who are also ratified by the executive committee. Current members include Sandra Tietjen, chair, Cheryl Drewes, Michael Menne, and Dennis Northway, .
